Finlay has joined the Molecular Engineering group this year as a PhD student. His project aims to make predictions about new catalytic materials through data mining using the group's ChemDataExtractor tool and further machine-learning techniques.
Finlay graduated with an MSci degree in Chemistry with Molecular Physics from Imperial College London in 2020. His Master's project, undertaken in the Computational Materials Science group, involved using DFT to model novel metal phthalocyanine-based molecular magnetic materials for applications in spintronics. Finlay then completed an MSc by Thesis in Physics in the Simulations of Soft Matter group at Durham University in 2021, during which he investigated the effects of confining conical surfaces on the structure of colloidal crystals with basin-hopping, a Monte Carlo-inspired energy minimization technique.
