Andrew was an MPhil student from 2009-10, studying organic nonlinear optical materials. His work involved experimentally characterizing these materials with an eye towards understanding the relationship between their molecular structure and nonlinear optical function. This included determining the molecular structures using X-ray diffraction, as well as measuring the nonlinear responses via electro-optic (Pockel’s effect) and Hyper-Rayleigh scattering (second harmonic) experiments.
He was born and grew up in Durham, NC and previously studied at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, CA. As an undergraduate he performed research in a variety of areas such as high-intensity optics, fluid dynamics, and laser-driven fusion.
