Matt is a final-year PhD student working on discovery of more efficient dyes for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSC). This is achieved primarily through computational methods, using systematic data-mining techniques that have the capacity to identify entirely new classes of dyes. This will potentially offer far greater improvements in efficiency than more commonly used iterative discovery methods. Current work is focused on developing a comprehensive chemical structure database that contains both experimental data and calculated properties that act as indicators for DSC efficiency. These indicators can then be used to produce predictions for high efficiency dyes that can then be validated experimentally.
Matt was previously at Imperial College London, where his research focused on applying methods from physics and mathematics to the analysis of electrogram signals to help diagnose and treat the cardiac arrhythmia Atrial Fibrillation.
