Nicholas Weng

Nic was a PhD student from 2005-9, working on organic nonlinear optical materials. His studies involved searching for nonlinear optical materials using structure-property correlations from structural databases, and the DFT modelling of these materials. The effect of molecular structure on the nonlinear optical response was carried out in conjunction experimentally with X-ray diffraction studies, measurements of the linear electro-optic effect (Pockel’s effect) using thin film reflection, and second-harmonic generation measurements using the Hyper-Rayleigh scattering technique. Parts of his work were done in collaboration with the CCDC, the University of Durham, and the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.
