Dr Paul Waddell joined our group from the University of St Andrews where he completed both his undergraduate and doctoral degrees. His Ph.D research focused on the synthesis and characterization of chalcogen-nitrogen-metal ring complexes and a variety of platinum(II) dihalides with coordinated phosphorus ligands with an emphasis on using single-crystal X-ray crystallography to study the relationship between the 31P NMR and X-ray data of these complexes.
At Cambridge, Paul further developed his crystallographic research. He was engaged in elucidating structure-function relationships in various optoelectronic materials. Within this scope, he had a particular interest in intermolecular interactions and their effect on physical properties and supramolecular environments. Paul left Molecular Engineering in 2014 to take up the post of Crystallography Officer at Newcastle University.
